Big entertaining decks for Fairfield homes, built in merbau, spotted gum or composite and sized for the whole family at once.
Fairfield households entertain properly. The decks we build here are rarely a two-chair balcony, they are wide platforms that carry a long table, a full outdoor kitchen and twenty people on a Sunday. That changes the engineering. Bearers get upsized, joist centres tighten and footings are sized for real live load rather than the minimum, because a deck holding a crowd behaves nothing like a deck holding a barbecue.
The housing stock helps. A lot of Fairfield 2165 blocks are wide brick homes from the sixties and seventies with a deep rear yard and a big slab patio already poured. Where the slab is sound we deck straight over it on battens, gaining a warm timber floor without touching the concrete. Where the yard steps down toward the rear boundary, a raised deck with wide stairs to the lawn opens the whole yard up and gives the kitchen a direct line out.
We build in merbau, spotted gum, blackbutt or capped composite, and we set out the board runs so joins land where they are least visible. Every Fairfield deck comes with a fixed written quote after a free on-site measure. Call 0492 879 796 to book yours.
Wide-format Fairfield decks framed for real crowd loading, with joist centres and footings sized for a full table and standing guests.
Merbau, blackbutt and spotted gum in one hundred and forty millimetre boards, which suit the generous spans of a Fairfield backyard.
Capped composite for households that would rather host than sand and oil. Consistent colour across a large area and no annual coating.
Sound seventies patios across Fairfield West and Fairfield Heights are covered on battens, avoiding demolition and skip costs.
Generous stair runs from deck to lawn, built to standard rise and going so the step down never feels awkward under a full house.
A pergola or louvred roof over part of the deck keeps the table usable in Fairfield summer heat and through winter showers.
Most Fairfield decks we build land between twenty five and sixty square metres because the blocks are deep and the households entertain. Once you pass twenty five square metres the deck stops being exempt development, so the design conversation and the approval conversation happen together. We size the deck to the furniture you actually want on it, then check what that means for approval.
Spotted gum and blackbutt are both class one durability above ground and hold their shape better than merbau in wide boards, which matters on a large Fairfield deck where cupping shows. Merbau is cheaper and still excellent, but expect tannin bleed early on and slightly more movement. All three need oiling. We show samples of each at the measure.
Yes. Fairfield has a lot of sound old slabs that only need covering. We mechanically fix low-profile treated battens or pedestals, pack them until the surface is dead level, and lay boards over. Slab falls and drainage paths are kept open, and the finished deck stays below the damp-proof course so the brickwork is not bridged.
If the deck is over twenty five square metres, more than one metre above ground, or closer than nine hundred millimetres to a boundary, it falls outside exempt development under the Codes SEPP. Depending on the design it can often still be approved as complying development through a private certifier, otherwise it goes to Fairfield City Council as a DA. We tell you which path applies before you commit.
Realistically, a broom weekly, a wash a couple of times a year and a re-coat with decking oil every twelve to eighteen months. Sunny Fairfield decks are at the shorter end, covered decks at the longer. Sanding back is only needed if the deck has been left to grey for years. If that maintenance sounds like too much on a sixty square metre deck, composite is worth the extra up front.
