Structural & Engineer-Certified Retaining Walls

A structural retaining wall is one that carries real load — holding back a driveway, supporting a building platform, or terracing a sloping block — rather than simply edging a garden bed. In NSW, walls over 600mm generally need a CDC and walls over 1m need engineering: a design signed off by a structural engineer, footings and reinforcement built to that design, and certification on completion. We build to the engineer's drawings and arrange the certification, so the wall is documented for council, insurance and any future sale of the property.

For structural applications we most often build reinforced concrete sleeper walls on galvanised steel H-beams set in mass concrete footings, and reinforced block walls with a rendered or clad finish where the wall is a visual feature. Both systems handle surcharge loads (a car, a shed, a pool nearby) far better than timber, and both are designed around drainage — ag-line behind the base course, free-draining backfill and weep points — because water pressure, not soil, is what breaks retaining walls.

Drainage, Footings and Why Retaining Walls Fail

Almost every leaning or collapsed retaining wall we're called to in Sydney failed for the same reason: water. Soil behind a wall doubles in effective weight when saturated, and without a drainage path that hydrostatic pressure pushes the wall over — slowly at first, then all at once after a heavy storm. That's why every wall we build includes an ag-pipe behind the base wrapped in geotextile fabric, a free-draining gravel backfill zone rather than clay pushed straight against the sleepers, and weep points that let water escape rather than build up.

Footings are the other half of the story. Post depth has to match wall height and soil type — as a rule of thumb, a third to half the exposed wall height in the ground, set in concrete. In the reactive clay soils common across Western Sydney, shallow footings move with the wet-dry cycle and the wall telegraphs it within a couple of seasons. We size footings to the site, not to a standard template.
