Landscaping in Fairfield: What the Local Conditions Demand

Most of the Fairfield LGA sits on Wianamatta shale, which produces a heavy clay soil that holds water in winter and sets hard in summer. That single fact drives most of our design decisions locally: garden beds need gypsum and organic matter worked through before planting, turf needs a proper sand-and-soil base rather than being laid straight onto scarified clay, and any paved area needs a compacted road-base layer thick enough to stop movement when the clay swells and shrinks through the seasons.

The low-lying parts of Fairfield near Prospect Creek and the Georges River tributaries add a drainage requirement on top. Where a backyard sits flat and holds water after rain, we install agricultural drainage lines and fall the finished surface towards a legal point of discharge before any turf or paving goes down. Skipping that step is the most common reason a Fairfield lawn fails in its first wet winter.
