Common questions about driveways and entrances
Concrete is generally lower maintenance and more cost-effective for large areas. Pavers offer a more premium look, are less prone to cracking (as they are flexible), and individual pavers can be replaced if stained or damaged.
Standard residential driveways should be at least 100mm thick with steel reinforcement (mesh) to handle the weight of passenger vehicles. Heavier vehicles may require 125mm or 150mm thickness.
Yes, we can often extend an existing driveway with matching concrete or a complementary border of pavers to create extra parking space or easier access.
You generally need approval for the "layback" or "crossing" (the part on council land connecting to the road). Internal driveways may be exempt development if they meet certain criteria (permeability, drainage). We can advise on this.
Proper preparation is key: a compacted sub-base, correct thickness, steel reinforcement, and expansion cuts (control joints) placed at correct intervals all help minimize uncontrolled cracking.
