A gabion wall consists of galvanised wire mesh baskets filled with natural stone, granite boulders or recycled concrete. The structure is gravity-based — its mass and permeability allow water to drain through, reducing hydrostatic pressure. Gabions are popular for erosion control, terracing and as decorative garden features.

In NSW, retaining walls up to 600mm high retaining less than 600mm of soil may be built as Exempt Development without a DA. Walls over 600mm typically require Council approval or a Complying Development Certificate, and walls over 1m in most councils require an engineer's design.

Galvanised gabion baskets last 25–50 years in most Australian conditions. PVC-coated baskets last longer in coastal or acidic soil environments. The stone fill is essentially permanent. Regular inspection for mesh corrosion is recommended every 5–10 years.

We most commonly use 100–150mm blue metal (basalt), river boulders or sandstone cobbles. Decorative options include sandstone blocks or mixed coloured stone. The stone must be angular enough to lock together and larger than the mesh openings (typically 80mm minimum).
