Choosing a Driveway Surface in the Shire

Sandstone is the classic Sutherland Shire driveway. It suits the sandstone bedrock and bushland setting through Bangor, Illawong, Menai and Woronora, weathers to a warm tone rather than fading, and is easy to repair panel by panel if a section lifts. It is the slowest surface to lay because each unit is bedded individually.

Travertine and porcelain pavers are the usual choice around pools from Cronulla through to Caringbah because they stay cooler underfoot and hold slip resistance when wet. Brick and concrete pavers give the most economical per-square-metre result for a plain driveway and come in the widest colour range.

Asphalt is a different proposition. It goes down fast, costs less per square metre than unit paving on a large area, and is well suited to long shared driveways, strata car parks and steep access ways where a continuous surface beats individual units. Its trade-off is appearance and lifespan: asphalt softens in a Sydney summer, needs resealing every few years, and cannot be lifted and relaid in patches without the repair being visible. For a residential Shire frontage we generally recommend unit paving; for long runs, commercial access and budget-driven resurfacing, asphalt is the sensible option and we can quote either.

Why Shire Paving Fails, and How We Prevent It

The two failure modes we are called out to fix most often in the Shire are subsidence at the crossover and movement on sloping driveways. Both trace back to base preparation. Sandstone bedrock is common through the Shire, but so are pockets of loose sandy fill, particularly on battle-axe blocks and older subdivisions. We excavate to firm material, lay and compact road base in layers rather than in one lift, and use a stabilised bedding course rather than loose sand on any driveway with a gradient.

Coastal suburbs from Cronulla to Kurnell add salt exposure. We specify sealers rated for coastal conditions and stainless or galvanised edge restraints, because plain steel edging near the beach corrodes and lets the paved edge spread within a few years.
