Wide driveways, front yard paving and generous entertaining areas laid across Fairfield, built to take several cars and big family gatherings.
Fairfield homes are built for family life and the paving has to match. We spend a lot of time here widening driveways so two or three cars fit off the street, paving front yards for extra hardstand and laying large rear entertaining areas under existing pergolas. Bigger paved areas put more pressure on the base and the drainage design, so we set out the falls and the point where water leaves the site before any excavation starts.
Much of the housing through Fairfield, Fairfield Heights and Canley Vale dates from the fifties to the seventies, and the original concrete paths and aprons are now cracked, patched and uneven. Where that old concrete is stable it can sometimes stay as a sub-base and we build levels over it. Where it has broken up, or sits too high against the brickwork, we break it out and cart it away so the finished paving can sit safely below the damp course.
A new or widened vehicle crossing needs a driveway crossing application to Fairfield City Council before the kerb is opened, and the paved apron has to meet the approved layback level. Because so many Fairfield blocks now carry a granny flat or second dwelling at the rear, we also build the long side access paths and paved rear hardstands that link the two, keeping the run wide enough for a wheelie bin, a trailer and a mower.

Extra hardstand for the two and three car households common in Fairfield, jointed against the existing slab properly.
Low-maintenance paved frontages with a border of garden or turf so the block still drains and looks softer.
Large rear areas set out under an existing pergola or awning with a fall running clear of the house.
Long side paths and rear hardstands wide enough for bins, trailers and everyday access to a second dwelling.
Breaking out cracked or overly high concrete and removing the spoil before the new base is built.
Poured decorative finishes that cover a big Fairfield frontage in one seamless, easy to hose surface.
Fairfield jobs are quoted by the square metre once we know the finished area, the material and how much old concrete has to come out. Demolition and tip fees are often the difference between two quotes, so ours lists them separately. Book a free on-site measure and you get a fixed written price covering excavation, base, laying and jointing.
Inside your boundary you have a lot of freedom, but the vehicle crossing at the kerb is controlled by Fairfield City Council and has maximum widths depending on your frontage and whether it is a single or double crossing. If you only widen the driveway inside the boundary and keep the existing layback, no crossing application is needed. Changing the kerb does need one.
Sometimes. If the slab is stable, does not rock underfoot and the extra height will not bring the finished surface up near the damp course or a doorway, we can lay pavers on a bedding course over the top. If it moves at the cracks, or the levels do not allow it, laying over it just transfers the problem to the new surface and we would rather break it out.
A big paved area sheds a surprising amount of water in a storm. We give it a consistent fall, usually a minimum of one in one hundred, direct it to a garden bed, a grated drain or a pit, and where the area is boxed in by fences we install a channel drain connected to the stormwater line so nothing ponds against the house.
For busy Fairfield entertaining areas and driveways, dense concrete pavers and porcelain hold up best against barbecue oil, tyre marks and general traffic. Natural sandstone is beautiful but more porous, so if you choose it we recommend a penetrating sealer. Whichever you pick, stabilised joint sand and an occasional pressure clean keep it looking new.
