Paving Contractors in Gregory Hills

Gregory Hills is built across genuinely rolling ground and it shows in the backyards. Plenty of blocks were cut at the front and filled at the rear, or the reverse, leaving a batter running through the middle of the yard. Paving those blocks well means deciding early where the level changes happen: a set of wide comfortable steps, a low retaining wall with paving above and below, or a graded path that absorbs the fall gradually.

Because so much of the ground here is placed fill, base preparation is not optional. We strip the loose material, build back in compacted layers and pay particular attention to the edge of a batter where fill is always at its softest. Paving that runs right to the top of a filled batter also needs an edge restraint or a small retaining element, otherwise the outer row slowly creeps downhill and the joints open up.

The other regular Gregory Hills job is the pool surround. New pools go in across this suburb constantly, and the surround decides how the whole yard feels and functions. We pave once the shell is backfilled and compacted, keep the fall running away from the water and the house, and use a cool, slip-resistant surface such as unfilled travertine or textured porcelain. Camden Council handles the vehicle crossing approval out the front.

Paving Gregory Hills FAQs

What does paving cost in Gregory Hills?

Slope is the main variable here. A flat rear yard is straightforward, whereas a batter that needs cut and fill, a retaining element and steps takes more excavation and more materials. We measure the levels on site at no charge and give you a fixed written quote that shows the paving, any retaining and any drainage as separate items.

Should I level my sloping yard or terrace it?

It depends on the height difference. Under about 300mm we can usually grade it out within the paving. Beyond that, cutting the whole yard flat means either a tall retaining wall or dumping fill against the house, so terracing into two levels with a step between them is normally cheaper, safer and better looking in a Gregory Hills backyard.

How do you build a base on filled ground?

We test how the ground behaves under the machine, remove any soft or spongy material, then place road base in layers around 100mm thick and compact each one before adding the next. Along the edge of a fill batter we widen the base beyond the paved area so the outer row is not sitting on the crumbly shoulder of the fill.

What makes steps comfortable to use?

Consistent risers and deep treads. We aim for risers of about 150mm with treads around 350mm, and every riser in a flight the same height, because a single odd step is what people trip on. On the wider Gregory Hills terraces we often use two shallow flights with a landing rather than one long run.

Does travertine around a pool need much maintenance?

Not much. Give it an occasional hose or gentle pressure clean and apply a penetrating sealer every few years to help it resist salt, sunscreen and leaf staining. Unfilled travertine can develop small surface pits over time, which are easily filled during a service visit. It stays cool underfoot, which is why it remains the favourite around here.
