Paving Contractors in Greystanes

Greystanes sits on the Prospect shale ridge and anyone who has tried to dig a post hole here knows exactly what that means. The ground is hard and rocky in places and heavy clay in others, sometimes within the same backyard. That variability is why we will not quote a Greystanes job off a photo. Rock slows excavation right down, while soft clay pockets need more base than the section sitting next to them.

The upside of the suburb is space. Backyards here are generous by Sydney standards, so we get to build proper entertaining areas: a paved zone under the pergola, a path linking it to the pool, a hardstand for the caravan down the side. Larger areas need thought about movement and drainage, so we detail joints in poured concrete, keep the falls consistent across the whole area and make sure water has a clear exit instead of banking up at a fence line.

Out the front, Greystanes driveways tend to be wide and frequently carry a second vehicle or a trailer. We build those on 150 to 200mm of compacted road base with extra strength near the kerb where loading is heaviest. Cumberland Council approves any new or widened vehicle crossing, and the paved apron inside the boundary has to meet the approved layback level cleanly so there is no lip for tyres to hit.

Paving Greystanes FAQs

Does rock in the ground make paving more expensive in Greystanes?

It can. If we hit solid shale at excavation depth, breaking it out takes extra plant and time. We assess the likely ground conditions at the site measure, ask about any previous digging on the property, and where there is real uncertainty we state clearly in the quote how rock excavation would be handled rather than surprising you mid job.

How deep should the base be under a Greystanes driveway?

We aim for 150 to 200mm of road base compacted in layers over firm subgrade for a domestic driveway, and more where a caravan or work vehicle parks regularly. The bedding course above it stays thin, around 25 to 30mm, because a thick sand bed is exactly what lets pavers rut under wheels over time.

Do large concrete areas need expansion joints?

Yes. Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with temperature, so a large Greystanes patio or driveway needs control joints cut or tooled at planned spacings, plus isolation joints where the slab meets the house or a pool shell. Without them the slab decides its own crack lines, which are always uglier than a planned joint.

What is needed for a caravan or boat hardstand?

More base and more strength than a garden path. Jockey wheels and stabiliser legs concentrate a lot of weight into small points, so we build a deeper compacted base and use either a reinforced concrete pad or 60mm dense pavers with concrete-haunched edges. We also set a fall so the pad is not holding water under a stored van.

Should exposed aggregate be sealed?

Sealing is recommended. It deepens the colour of the stone, makes the surface easier to hose clean and slows the absorption of oil and leaf tannin stains. Expect to reseal every three to five years in Greystanes depending on sun exposure and traffic, and use a non-slip additive on any sloped driveway section.
