Paving in Parramatta

Parramatta is within the City of Parramatta Council. Most residential paving — pathways, courtyards and patios — is exempt development. Driveway crossings from private property to the road require a Section 138 road works permit from City of Parramatta. Heritage conservation area properties may need additional approval for materials and colours.

Parramatta has a mix of Federation-era homes, 1960s–1980s brick homes and modern apartment developments. For older homes, clay brick or sandstone paving complements the heritage character. For modern townhouses and renovated properties, large-format porcelain pavers or contemporary concrete tiles provide a clean, premium finish.

Parramatta Formation shale clay soils have moderate shrink-swell behaviour. Paving on clay requires a minimum 100 mm compacted road base under pathways and 150 mm under driveways. Without this base, pavers will shift and become uneven within a few years. We always include proper base construction in our Parramatta paving quotes.

Sometimes. If the existing base is structurally sound and the level changes are minor, we can re-lay shifted pavers and refill joints without full demolition. If the base has failed — sunken sections, cracked pavers, major level changes — full demolition and reconstruction is usually the more cost-effective long-term solution. We assess this during a free site visit.
