Fairfield's clay soils are some of the most challenging in the Sydney basin for retaining wall construction. The clay shrinks significantly in summer drought and expands aggressively in wet winters — this cycle generates hydrostatic pressure that causes walls without adequate drainage to lean, crack or fail within a few years. Every retaining wall we build in Fairfield includes subsoil ag-pipe drainage backed by clean gravel directly behind the wall face. This relieves hydrostatic pressure and is the single most critical factor in wall longevity on Fairfield clay. For concrete sleeper walls, we use solid steel H-posts — not hollow tube posts — which handle the lateral soil loads that are common on Fairfield's older residential blocks.

Fairfield City Council's development rules follow the NSW Housing Code. Retaining walls under 600mm are exempt development. Walls from 600mm to 1m require a Complying Development Certificate (CDC). Walls over 1m, or walls positioned near property boundaries or drainage easements, require a Development Application (DA).
