Can you build very long Colorbond runs in Leppington?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We regularly build runs well over a hundred metres on the acreage blocks around Leppington, Rossmore and Bringelly. The critical part is the set out, because over that distance a small drift becomes very visible. We string the line, check it against the boundary marks, and step the panels in even increments where the ground rolls so the top of the fence reads as a series of clean straight sections.

Accepted Answer

It is, as long as the posts are specified for the exposure. Wind is the main load on any solid fence and Leppington has plenty of open ground with nothing to slow it down. On exposed boundaries we reduce post spacing below the standard layout and increase footing depth and diameter. That is the difference between a fence that stands for decades and one that starts leaning after the first bad season.

How does cost sharing work with a rural neighbour?

The NSW Dividing Fences Act 1991 applies to rural boundaries as well as suburban ones, so the standard position is still an equal share of a sufficient dividing fence. What counts as sufficient can differ on rural land, since a neighbour running stock may consider wire adequate. If you want solid steel on a boundary where wire would do, expect to negotiate, and put the proposal in a written fencing notice with the quote attached.

Will a dog get under a colourbond fence?

Accepted Answer

Not if the base is detailed properly. On the semi-rural blocks around Leppington the ground is soft and a determined dog will try. We set the bottom of the sheet close to the ground and, where digging is likely, add a concrete plinth or a run of sleepers under the panels. That gives a solid base the dog cannot get past, whether you call the fence colourbond or Colorbond.

Yes. Most of the older Leppington boundaries are ringlock or plain wire on star pickets and timber strainers, sometimes with decades of growth through it. We pull the pickets, roll the wire, dig out the strainer posts and take everything away, then set the new steel posts on the correct line rather than following the old drift.
