Minto sits on the heavy shale clay that runs right through Campbelltown, and that ground is unforgiving on badly laid paving. It holds water after rain and shrinks hard in a dry spell. Concrete poured thin over it cracks within a few seasons, and pavers bedded on sand straight over untouched clay start to ripple. We dig out the soft clay, build a compacted road base platform and let that layer spread the load instead.

A large share of Minto housing is brick veneer from the seventies and eighties, alongside the newer homes built through the renewal areas. On the older properties we are usually replacing a cracked single driveway, a stepped front path or a laundry landing that has dropped away from the door. On the newer builds it is more often a rear alfresco area, a side path and a hardstand for a second car that will not fit in the garage.

Levels matter here too, because many Minto streets run across a grade and the house sits above or below the kerb line. We set the driveway grade so the transition at the layback is not abrupt enough to scrape a bumper, keep the crossfall shedding to the street, and make sure the finished paving stays below the damp course. New or altered vehicle crossings are approved by Campbelltown City Council before the kerb is opened.
