The minimum base for residential pathway paving in Sydney is 100 mm of compacted crushed rock (road base). For driveways subject to vehicle traffic, 150 mm is the minimum. On reactive clay soils — common in Western and South-Western Sydney — we often increase pathway bases to 125 mm for added stability through wet-dry seasonal movement.

Yes. Mixed material paving — for example, concrete pavers for a driveway transitioning to sandstone for an alfresco area — is very popular. We use appropriate transitions between materials, ensuring heights match and the aesthetic is cohesive. Different materials have specific base and installation requirements that we account for in the design.

A standard residential pathway or small alfresco area of 20 to 40 sqm takes 1 to 2 days to install. A medium driveway (40 to 80 sqm) typically takes 2 to 3 days including base preparation. Larger projects spanning multiple areas are staged over 3 to 7 days depending on scope and site conditions.

Sealing is optional for most concrete and clay pavers. For natural stone such as sandstone and travertine, sealing is recommended to protect against staining from oil, food and organic material. Porcelain pavers are non-porous and do not require sealing. We advise on appropriate sealer products based on the specific material used in your project.
