Sandstone block and boulder retaining walls in Sydney — the traditional Sydney material, built to last generations.
Fencing and Landscaping Experts provide sandstone retaining walls across Sydney, including the North Shore, Northern Beaches, Forest District, Hills District, western Sydney, the Sutherland Shire and Macarthur. The service uses sawn sandstone blocks or natural boulders, the material Sydney's original walls were built from and still the longest-lasting option available. Per square metre of wall face, after a free site inspection. Building since 2016, licensed in NSW and insured to $20 million. Phone 0492 879 796.
Sandstone Retaining Walls in Sydney uses sawn sandstone blocks or natural boulders, the material Sydney's original walls were built from and still the longest-lasting option available. We have been building across Sydney since 2016, from the western suburbs through to the North Shore, Northern Beaches and Forest District.
Sandstone walls are built, not assembled. Blocks are laid on a compacted base with a slight batter back into the slope, joints staggered, and the same drainage detail behind them as any engineered wall — the stone will outlast everyone involved, but only if water is not running through the wall.
Conditions change dramatically across Sydney, and so does the right specification — sandy coastal ground, reactive clay on the ridges, sandstone shelf on the harbour slopes and bushfire prone land against the national parks all lead to different answers for the same brief. The breakdown by region is below.

Machine-cut sandstone blocks laid in courses for a crisp, formal wall face.
Natural random-sized sandstone boulders placed for an organic, landscape-led result.
Dismantling and rebuilding original sandstone walls in kind, reusing the stone where sound.
Solid stone treads and risers integrated into the wall run.
Lower decorative stonework, planters and garden edging in matching stone.
Stone facing over a structural block wall where full stone construction is not practical.
Upper North Shore: Sandstone reads correctly against the Upper North Shore's period homes and mature gardens in a way that concrete sleepers never quite do, which is why it remains the preferred choice on the better streets.
Lower North Shore: Sandstone is the historic Lower North Shore material, and on heritage properties and in conservation areas it is often the only wall material that will be accepted. Much of our work here is rebuilding failing original walls in kind.
Northern Beaches: Sandstone suits the Northern Beaches particularly well because it is completely immune to the salt that degrades steel and coatings, and it weathers into the coastal landscape rather than standing out against it.
Forest District: Sandstone is non-combustible and locally native to the Forest District's geology, making it both the compliant and the visually appropriate choice against bushland boundaries.
Sandstone Retaining Walls is quoted on the specifics of the site — material, height or wall face area, ground conditions and access. Because those vary so much across Sydney, we give a fixed written price after a free on-site measure rather than a per-metre figure over the phone.
Right across the metropolitan area, including the Upper and Lower North Shore, Northern Beaches, Forest District, Hills District, western Sydney, the Sutherland Shire and the Macarthur region.
It depends on the scale and the location. Standard work within exempt development criteria generally does not; extra height, front boundaries, retaining walls over the 600mm retaining wall exempt threshold, heritage items and bushfire prone land generally do. We identify the path before quoting.
Yes — NSW contractor licensed and carrying $20 million in public liability cover on every job.
Most residential work is completed in one to a few days once materials are on site. Larger and engineered jobs are programmed with a clear timeline set out in the quote before work starts.
Four things, in roughly this order: the material and specification, the size or height, the ground conditions — rock, reactive clay and sand all change how footings are formed — and access, since material that has to be hand-carried costs more in labour than material delivered to the work. None of those four is visible from a photograph, which is why the quote follows a site measure and is then fixed in writing.
