Why a sliding gate suits a Mosman driveway

A sliding gate needs no swing arc, which is the deciding factor on most Mosman entrances. Streets here are narrow, footpaths are close to the boundary, and driveways commonly rise or fall steeply from the kerb. A swing leaf on that geometry either fouls the ground as it opens or swings out over a footpath, and neither is acceptable.

The trade-off is that a conventional sliding gate needs a run-back alongside the opening at least as long as the gate itself. On a wide Mosman frontage that is straightforward. On a narrow one, or where a sandstone wall or a garden bed sits immediately beside the driveway, the run-back is the constraint that decides the whole design.

Where the run-back is not available, the answer is usually a bi-parting pair of sliding leaves, each running half the distance, or a swing pair with hinge geometry set up for the grade. We measure the frontage and the fall before recommending any of the three.

Track or cantilever on a Mosman site?

What about sandstone and footings?

Mosman sits on Hawkesbury sandstone with thin soil over it, and a sliding gate imposes concentrated loads on a small number of posts. That combination means rock drilling and chemically anchored fixings rather than a conventional dug footing. It is slower and it is the right way to do it, because a cantilever post that moves takes the whole gate out of alignment.

Existing sandstone retaining walls and rock cuttings along driveways are common here, and they are frequently where the gate posts want to go. Fixing to an old sandstone wall is possible but has to be assessed, because a wall built a century ago was not designed for a moving load.

We assess the substrate before quoting. Where the rock is close to the surface it usually makes the job easier, not harder, provided the right drilling gear is on site.

Automation, safety and power

A sliding gate motor is sized on leaf weight, leaf length and duty cycle together. On a Mosman driveway used several times a day the duty cycle matters as much as the weight. Any powered gate a person can walk through needs photocell beams and force limiting, plus a manual release and battery backup so a power failure does not trap a car on the wrong side.

Access control is worth planning at the design stage rather than adding later. Intercom, keypad, remote and phone-based control all need cabling routed and a position chosen that a driver can reach from the car, which on a narrow Mosman street is not always where you would expect.

Heritage and streetscape controls in Mosman
