Timber requires periodic oiling or painting to maintain appearance and resist rot. H4-treated posts are essential wherever ground contact occurs. Aluminium Slat and Tube Fencing is the premium choice for modern homes and coastal properties — aluminium never rusts, requires no painting, and is available in dozens of profile sizes and powder-coat colours. It is the best material for the NSW C4 and C5 marine corrosivity zones within 1 km of the ocean. Glass Fencing (12 mm toughened to AS 1288, frameless or semi-frameless) is the preferred pool barrier material for homeowners who want an unobstructed view of the pool area. Chain-Wire Fencing offers the most cost-effective security perimeter option for commercial, industrial and rural applications, at a competitive rate for standard residential grades.

Aluminium fencing lasts longest in Sydney's coastal and urban environments — it is essentially rust-proof and has a service life of 30+ years with minimal maintenance. Colorbond steel is a close second, with a 20–30 year lifespan when the BlueScope AZ150 substrate is used. Hardwood timber fencing lasts 15–25 years when properly maintained. Chain-wire galvanised steel fencing typically lasts 15–20 years in non-coastal conditions.
At the time of installation, hardwood paling timber fencing is typically a competitive rate, while standard Colorbond is a competitive rate — so timber is often cheaper upfront. However, Colorbond has significantly lower lifetime maintenance costs (no painting, sealing or rot treatment required), making it cheaper over the fence's full lifespan. In coastal areas, Colorbond with AZ150 coating is recommended over standard galvanised timber hardware.
Glass fencing (frameless or semi-frameless, 12 mm toughened glass to AS 1288) is the premium choice for pool barriers in NSW — it provides full visibility into the pool area and complies easily with AS 1926.1-2012 non-climbable zone requirements. Aluminium tubular pool fencing is more affordable and also compliant. Colorbond and timber are less common for pool barriers due to visibility limitations.
For properties in Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) zones, Colorbond steel and aluminium are the preferred non-combustible fencing materials. At BAL-29 and above, AS 3959-2018 effectively prohibits timber fencing within the asset protection zone. Colorbond is the most cost-effective compliant option for most BAL-rated lots in Western Sydney, the Hills Shire and Hornsby Shire.
Standard chain-wire boundary fencing up to 1.8 m in height is generally exempt development in most NSW residential zones under the SEPP (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008. Security chain-wire fencing above 2.1 m, or fencing with barbed wire within 3 m of a public place, may require a Development Application. Commercial and industrial security fencing requirements vary by council.
